Council to Secure Long-Term Future of its Golf Courses

Cheshire East Council is offering the golf industry the opportunity to operate its two popular golf courses.

The authority is undertaking a strategic review of how the golf courses at Malkins Bank and Queens Park should be run over the long term.

It has appointed UK golf property specialist Smith Leisure to advise on the process.

The Council is keen to examine ways of further improving the 18-hole Malkins Bank course, which it runs in-house, with possible options including a driving range or short academy course.

Discussions are taking place with American Golf which currently operates the nine-hole Queens Park Golf Course in Crewe under a lease contract.

Councillor Andrew Knowles, Cabinet member with responsibility for health and wellbeing, said: “Both Malkins Bank and Queens Park are popular venues and we are fully committed to maintaining golf provision in Cheshire East.

“This review will provide an excellent opportunity to potentially enhance both facilities.

“We are exploring a number of options which include - but are not limited to - leasing or selling one or both venues.

“We feel confident that they will appeal to private sector golf operators, leisure trust operators or perhaps a local individual or consortium.

“As part of the strategic review we are seeking written feedback from the golf industry and the results of this will play an important part in how the Council proceeds thereafter.”
