Be Steady, Be Safe

Be Steady, Be Safe exercise programme for older people expands

Special exercise classes designed to improve leg strength and balance in older people are on now offer on a weekly basis throughout Cheshire East.

Be Steady, Be Safe is a series of classes for those who fear, or are at risk of, falling, poor balance or mobility.

Some classes are already up and running in Crewe and Nantwich but, due to high demand, the programme has been expanded to take in more towns across Cheshire East.

Councillor Janet Clowes, Cabinet member with responsibility for health and wellbeing, said: “As we get older, we may become less inclined to exercise and to keep ourselves strong and fit.

“Poor strength and balance are key risk factors for falling and injuries in older people and by improving this aspect of an individual’s fitness, we can reduce the risk of them being admitted to hospital.

“With gentle and continuous exercise the risk of having a fall reduces massively, so we would encourage as many people as possible to attend a class near to them.”

New classes have been developed and are now available in the following towns:

· Sandbach – Mondays, 10.30-11.30am at Union Street Community Centre

· Macclesfield – Tuesdays, 11am-noon at Harry Lawson Court, Crewe Avenue, Hurdsfield

· Alsager – Wednesdays, 10.30am-11.30am at Dennis Round Court, Hall Drive

· Nantwich – Wednesdays, 9.30am-10.30am/11am-noon/2-3pm at Mill House, Queens Drive

· Crewe – Wednesdays, 1.30-2.30pm at Jubliee House, St Pauls Street

· Crewe – Thursdays, 10.30am-11.30am at Linden Court, Hungerford Avenue

· Middlewich – Fridays, 12.30pm-1.30pm at Willowmere Extra Care, East Road.
